An assessment of the components of the TISI indicates a decline in all elements, including overall sales, overall orders, production volume, operating costs, and profitability. The decline in the industrial sentiment is attributed to fragile domestic purchasing power, as economic uncertainty persists along with high household debt levels and an increasing proportion of non-performing loans (NPLs), which has led to a slowdown in consumer goods consumption. Concurrently, the rising fuel prices have impacted production costs, as well as the increasing shipping rates due to shortages of shipping vessels and containers that cannot keep pace with turnover, resulting from extended transportation times caused by geopolitical issues. Additionally, operators are facing competition from cheaper foreign products entering the Thai and ASEAN markets, making Thai products less competitive, along with the adverse effects of climate change on agricultural products.
Nonetheless, in May, there remain supportive factors from the demand for goods during the opening of the academic year 2024, such as clothing, footwear, leather and leather products, as well as printing and packaging. Simultaneously, the food security crisis in many countries has positively affected the export of Thai food products. Furthermore, exporters are benefiting from a depreciated Thai baht, which is trading between 36 and 37 baht per US dollar.
