Future Food, known to many, includes Plant-based Meat, herbs, or even protein sources from insects such as crickets. However, did you know that there is another insect that not only offers the opportunity to develop as a protein source but also presents opportunities for the industry while driving the BCG economic model and the growth of the country's economy? This insect is called Black Soldier Fly or commonly known as “BSF”. It is characterized by its black color and categorized as a type of protein insect. As there is currently no official Thai common name, it is referred to by various names such as striped fly, striped maggot, black fly, and black soldier fly. However, some researchers and academics refer to it as “protein insect” to reduce the feeling of disgust associated with it.

BSF and Food Security
According to the 2019 World Population Prospects report by the Economic and Social Affairs Division of the United Nations (UN), it is projected that by 2050, the world population will reach 9.7 billion people. In addition to food being insufficient to meet the increasing demand from the growing population, there will also be an increased demand for nutrients and meat. However, before food can be consumed by humans, it must start at the upstream, midstream, and downstream stages.
BSF is found in nature and has been utilized in many countries around the world. Due to its protein insect characteristics, it has been used as animal feed, being incorporated into livestock and pet food formulations to reduce the high costs of feed raw materials and decrease the importation of animal feed protein sources. As a result, many countries, particularly those in the Asia-Pacific region with favorable geographical conditions, such as Thailand, which has been breeding it for some time, China, Vietnam, and Indonesia, have expanded their production of this insect for trade.

Key Features of BSF
From various research studies, it has been concluded that this type of insect is safe, does not act as a pest or carrier of diseases to humans and animals, and importantly, it has a low environmental impact. It can be considered an insect that helps create a good ecosystem and addresses the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. For example, the amount of food waste from various sources each day creates vast amounts of waste, leading to the production of methane gas. The BSF larvae can quickly decompose organic waste and can subsequently be used as fertilizer to improve soil quality.
Moreover, BSF is currently gaining popularity in the animal feed industry, with continuous demand and interest in the market, resulting in a purchase price of fresh insects rising to 500 Baht per kilogram.

Growth Trends and Regulations in Trading Partner Countries
Vantage Market Research has analyzed and projected the growth of the BSF market up to 2028, estimating an average annual growth rate of 34%, with a global market value reaching 46.2 billion Baht, indicating significant growth potential that merits attention. Particularly noteworthy are the opportunities, challenges, and possibilities for Thai research and Thai startups to seriously study and develop BSF as a new economic insect to create benefits for the agricultural sector, economy, and sustainable Thai industries.
Once BSF breeding is commercialized, especially for key export markets with high purchasing power such as the European Union (EU), where some countries allow BSF to be used in animal feed, as well as the United Kingdom, the United States, and Japan, Thai exporters should thoroughly study the regulations and requirements of each country regarding the production and use of BSF as animal feed or ingredients in animal and pet food to avoid losing trade opportunities. Additionally, there is a group of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries that view this as a new market not to be overlooked.

The BSF market presents both opportunities and interesting alternatives that are expanding. Currently, there are major operators who recognize this opportunity, but they may not be able to meet all demand. Therefore, if small operators and Thai startups wish to enter this market for business benefits, it is essential to consider various aspects such as research, life cycle of BSF, breeding areas, and breeding methods. Nevertheless, to facilitate access to information, interested parties can visit the farms in the northern and northeastern regions, which are currently breeding and developing BSF strains.
