If you observe closely, Soft Power has been subtly reaching us for a long time, in various forms of media and entertainment (such as films, cartoons, music, dramas, etc.), sports, food, tourism, products, and services, all of which have already created influences on thoughts, culture, and values, to the extent of changing behaviors without the need for force or coercive power (Hard Power) to attract, persuade, or influence popularity and acceptance, which can lead to intense enthusiasm and fascination. Consequently, many countries have increasingly focused on building Soft Power.

“Soft Power” is a term that has become commonly used in society. Although referred to as soft, its impact is anything but trivial. Many experts have provided definitions for this term.

In this regard, Brand Finance has released information about countries influential in Soft Power in 2022 (Global Soft Power Index 2022), revealing that the top 5 countries are the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, China, and Japan, while Thailand ranks 35th, having fallen from 33rd in 2021, raising points for consideration, as the assessment and measurement of Soft Power data statistically is not easy.

5 Influences That Should Be Promoted to Strengthen the Industrial Group

In the past year, the government has been promoting Thailand's image through Thai Soft Power to drive the creative economy via the 5F framework, which includes Food, Film, Thai Fashion Design, Thai Martial Arts, and Thai Festivals.

However, in reality, there are many aspects of Thai Soft Power that remain unmentioned, with an ecosystem that can be linked and strengthened by cooperating with the industrial sector, which is the real production sector. Here, I propose 5 influences that should be promoted as additional Thai Soft Power:

Power 1: Herbs The properties of Thai herbs have been recognized and trusted both domestically and internationally, leading to their widespread use in health and beauty care. This has resulted in a growing herbal market, as evidenced by data from the past 5 months (January-May 2023), where the export value of herbs was 5.62 million USD, with a growth rate of 20%. (Source: Information and Communication Technology Center, Office of the Permanent Secretary for Commerce, in collaboration with the Customs Department) Furthermore, the national action plan for herbal products, Version 2 (2023-2027), focuses on enhancing the competitiveness of herbs and herbal products, which will strengthen the supply chain for herbs and align with the BCG economic model.

Power 2: Cosmetics Ms. Kesmonnee Lertkitja, President of the Health and Beauty Industry Cluster at the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) and President of the Thai Cosmetic Manufacturers Association, revealed that the cosmetics industry continues to grow, as the purchasing power for cosmetics is no longer restricted to women alone. Additionally, the tourism sector has further boosted the demand for cosmetics, leading to a global beauty market valued at 648 billion THB in 2022 and a beauty market in Thailand valued at 246 billion THB, with a growth rate of 9.22%. This is partly due to the e-commerce market, which accounts for 28%. It is projected that in 2023, the growth rate will be 9.46%.

Cosmetics increasingly play a role in beauty and are interconnected with other industry sectors such as the herbal industry, the health and beauty cluster, and the fashion and lifestyle cluster.

Currently, the Thai cosmetics industry ranks 10th in the world and 1st in ASEAN, thus the government is urged to support the cosmetics industry to become a Soft Power and to provide opportunities for entrepreneurs to access international markets to sell Thai cosmetic products.

Power 3: Architecture In addition to expressing Thai identity and charm, architecture can also create added value from tourism for cultural learning and generate income for surrounding communities. It reflects the progress and luxury of a country that addresses new factors such as economy, technology, society, and community, including the use of environmentally friendly materials and the efficient use of resources according to the BCG economic model, energy conservation, and employing technology for smart buildings.

Moreover, architecture is not merely an art but also includes practical applications called construction, linking it to major industry sectors such as construction, steel, cement, granite and marble, roofing and equipment, etc.

Power 4: Music Since the COVID-19 situation, the music and song business has diversified and has been showing good growth, as it has adapted to the new way of life and has undergone significant changes. This is evident from the emergence of online viewing platforms and social media, along with the birth of new artists, thereby adding economic value and connecting with various industries, which is different from other industries involving producers, distributors, and copyright collection.

Ultimately, however, to elevate the creative and innovative industry into tangible outcomes in the future, there must be agencies in different roles providing support, such as the digital industry group, the electrical and electronics industry group, and the creative craft industry group.

Power 5: Talismans This has become a prominent trend in the digital era. The beliefs and faith that have long accompanied Thai people have been utilized as marketing strategies to enhance fortunes in finance, work, love, health, trade, luck, and many more. This trend does not only attract buyers from the Thai faith and collection groups, but it has also expanded to appeal to tourists from abroad. Although the overall export value of the amulet market and Thai sacred objects may not be very clear yet, it generates significant value and circulates a considerable amount of money in the system, particularly as a small-scale business operated by individuals.

According to a business analysis of activities related to beliefs to support marketing in January 2023 by the Department of Business Development, it was revealed that the nationality investing in this business is primarily Thai, with a value of 98.55 million THB, accounting for 96.64%, while foreign investment totaled 3.43 million THB, with China being the highest at 2.45 million THB (2.40%) and France at 0.98 million THB (0.96%).

In the context of the industry, it can be seen as a channel and opportunity for the jewelry and accessory industry. In addition to designing and altering the aesthetics of products to appear beautiful and modern, there is also potential to produce and export at global jewelry trade shows.

To drive Soft Power for economic value enhancement and elevate the Thai industry, there must be a strong push and collaboration from both the government and the private sector in all aspects. The government must awaken the power and be bold enough to invest so that all sectors head in the same direction, much like other countries that have successfully developed Soft Power. This could lead to an improved ranking of Thailand's Soft Power capabilities…It must be strong from within first!
