Reuters notes that the Thai economy is stronger than during the 1997 crisis and is better equipped to handle global pressures. 'Aekniti' is preparing to promote Thailand as a 'Trusted Connector' on the IMF-World Bank stage to attract global capital into future industries. Ms. Lallida Pheerawiwattanakarn, Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister's Office, revealed that Reuters published a report on October 9, 2022, titled 'Nearly 30 years after IMF rescue, Thailand faces new economic test' or 'Nearly 30 years after the IMF's assistance, Thailand faces a new economic test.'
The report reflects that although the Thai economy still faces pressures from the global economy, it has the capability to cope with challenges and has more stability than during the financial crisis in 1997. Meanwhile, Mr. Aekniti Nitithanprapas, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, is preparing to use the forum of the IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings 2026, which Thailand will host from October 12-18, to highlight Thailand's role as a 'Trusted Connector'—a reputable economic link to attract investment from around the world into future industries.
Ms. Lallida stated that the Reuters report references an assessment by Fitch Ratings made last September, which indicated that the Thai economy is coping with the impacts of global energy prices better than expected, inflationary pressures have decreased, and policy direction has become clearer, resulting in Fitch revising Thailand's credit outlook from 'negative' to 'stable'.
At the same time, Reuters also reported an interview with Mr. Aekniti, who emphasized the importance of driving the economy through investment, particularly in the semiconductor industry, data centers, advanced manufacturing, and electric vehicles, alongside the development of renewable energy, electrical networks, and human resources to support the high-tech industry. Ms. Lallida further noted that amid geopolitical conflicts and trade tensions, Thailand is set to present its potential as a neutral and secure investment destination.
Additionally, Thailand is poised to promote its role as a 'Trusted Connector' to enhance economic, trade, and investment cooperation among countries, utilizing its strengths in location, manufacturing base, and links to the regional economy as supporting factors. The Reuters report also highlighted the challenges facing the Thai economy, including slowing growth, household debt burdens, and the need for economic structural reform. The government prepares to leverage the opportunity of hosting the IMF-World Bank meetings to communicate the direction of the Thai economy, instill confidence among global investors, and promote investments in new industries to enhance competitiveness and create sustainable economic growth.
