In this meeting, Mr. Sommat expressed support for accelerating the high-speed rail project connecting three airports to build investor confidence.
He presented important issues related to infrastructure development and EEC area expansion as follows:
1. Promote the rail connectivity system into industrial estate areas to alleviate traffic issues around Laem Chabang Port and mitigate impacts on local residents.
2. Monitor the progress of pushing for Prachin Buri Province to be an additional area of the EEC by requesting the secretariat to include this topic as a continuing agenda and report the progress at each meeting.
The Prime Minister accepted the proposals and assigned the secretariat to study further, while Dr. Chula Sookmanop suggested holding monthly meetings.
Additionally, the Prime Minister stated that attracting investments currently cannot solely rely on the advantage of cheap labor; it must showcase the country's potential and readiness to support new industries in terms of employment, supply chain connectivity, and knowledge transfer to develop Thai personnel. The government thus emphasizes upskilling current skills and reskilling new skills along with the development of technology centers, educational centers, and research centers to prepare personnel in accordance with the demands of modern industries.
The Prime Minister also indicated that current investments focus on advanced technologies, as well as on conducting business that considers the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), environmental care, and social responsibility while supporting membership in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
Moreover, the Prime Minister reiterated that the development of the EEC must be conducted within the framework of law and regulations managing state affairs in the same way as other parts of the country, rather than establishing a state within a state. He also instructed close coordination with the Board of Investment (BOI) to ensure that investment promotion aligns with the same direction.
At the same time, Thailand has a geographical advantage for trade and transport linkages in the ASEAN region, thus all parties are requested to communicate the country's readiness in terms of location, infrastructure, and logistics systems to build investor confidence, as past investment results partially reflect investor interest in Thailand.
