Mr. Suwat Supakarndechakul, Vice Chairman of The Federation of Thai Industries and Chairman of the Automotive Industry Club, Mr. Vithavat Thongves, Secretary-General of the Automotive Industry Club, Mr. Surapong Paisitpattanapong, Advisor to the Chairman of the Automotive Industry Club and Spokesperson of the Automotive Industry Club, and Ms. On Raktipakorn, Deputy Spokesperson of the Automotive Industry Club, FTI, jointly held a press conference regarding the overall situation of the automotive industry, covering production volumes, domestic sales, and exports of cars and motorcycles in September 2026 as follows:

Mr. Suwat, Vice Chairman of The Federation of Thai Industries and Chairman of the Automotive Industry Club, stated that in the previous month, Thailand experienced flooding in several areas, directly affecting the operations of many automotive part manufacturers. For instance, in the Amata City industrial estate in Chonburi Province, where floodwater levels were high, many car manufacturing plants, although not directly flooded, had to temporarily halt production due to a shortage of parts and disrupted transportation routes, as employees faced difficulties commuting to work. However, based on a survey of members since mid-October, all factories have resumed normal production.
The impacts on production will be reflected in the figures reported in November. The Automotive Industry Club continues to assess that the impact from the flooding has not yet affected the car production target for 2026, maintaining a target of 1.45 million units, consisting of 900,000 units for export and 550,000 units for domestic sales, as many factories have planned to expedite production back to original schedules.
For consumers whose vehicles were damaged due to the flooding, member companies producing cars and motorcycles have launched campaigns offering discounts on labor, parts, and services, along with discounts for purchasing new cars and temporary deferments on debt repayment. Details can be found on FTI and TAIA's Facebook or Website.
Currently, we are still awaiting an official announcement regarding the tax restructuring measures for fully assembled imported cars. This adjustment in taxes aims to create fairness for operators investing and producing in Thailand, as well as signaling that Thailand values long-term investment and domestic value creation.
The automotive and parts industry is one of the country's key industries, with over 2,500 companies across the supply chain and involving more than 800,000 jobs—from car manufacturers and component producers to supporting industries, SMEs, and related service businesses. Promoting domestic production thus helps distribute benefits throughout the broader economy.
In terms of the overall automotive industry situation in the country over the past nine months, vehicle production and domestic sales have shown positive figures while exports have decreased, with domestic sales at approximately 521,000 units. However, the pickup truck market still experienced a contraction, particularly in the category of working pickup trucks, which are essential for professions such as farmers and vendors who face stringent credit conditions. The automotive industry group expects to see concrete and urgent “stimulus” measures from the government, especially targeting the pickup truck market, which is the country's product champion, in order to maintain production levels and competitive cost capabilities as well as the ecosystem of the product champion."

Sales
Domestic car sales in September 2026 totaled 55,255 units, down 7.61% from August 2026, but up by 14.28% compared to September 2025.

The increase was primarily due to electric vehicle sales, with BEVs accounting for 16,626 units sold, rising by 81.61% from the same month last year, while pickup sales continued to decline, selling 10,315 units, a decrease of 7.11% compared to last year, attributed to stringent lending conditions by financial institutions amid slow domestic economic growth, weak purchasing power due to high living costs, and parts sourced locally for over 90% of production. Additionally, using B20 fuel, which is environmentally friendly and aids farmers in their production, also continues to decline, negatively impacting the supporting industries that are part of the pickup supply chain. Including both Thai and Japanese companies, such as producers of radiators, exhaust systems, seat textiles, radios, air conditioning systems, glass, steel, tires, engines, petrochemicals, and internal combustion engine manufacturers, production had declined by three hundred thousand units. Furthermore, sales employees, technicians from pickup showrooms, financial institutions, insurance salespersons, and owners and staff selling aftermarket accessories, as well as heat rejection film installers, experienced reduced incomes. The government has seen declines in excise tax, VAT, corporate income tax, and personal income tax, exacerbating annual budget deficits. The public financial position has weakened, forcing the government to borrow, leading to public debt nearing its ceiling with production utilization remaining below 60%. The pickup production has shifted its manufacturing base from Japan to Thailand to fulfill export orders to over 120 countries, representing over 60% of exported vehicles, aligning with Thai consumer preferences for diverse business occupations contributing to household incomes—a critical factor enabling large-scale pickup production. Consequently, the production costs of pickups in Thailand are lower than in other countries, establishing a product champion status for Thailand. With existing employment levels needing to reduce due to the government's neglect for over three years regarding declining pickup sales, this has led to a decrease of over three hundred thousand units produced, indicating the government's failure to maintain existing jobs, which adversely affects sustainable economic development. Therefore, Thailand’s economy has been growing at a slow rate, lower than many neighboring ASEAN countries, resulting in minimal foreign investment growth and struggling domestic investors over the years. Job creation has been limited. Coupled with the inability to "maintain existing jobs," this significantly hinders sustainable economic growth.
Mr. Pascal Donohue, Managing Director and Chief Knowledge Officer of the World Bank Group, stated that job creation will be a key agenda item for this meeting, emphasizing the importance of valuing job creation and retention. He remarked that capital is merely a means to achieve a larger goal—economic development, particularly for creating jobs for the populace. Without job creation, economic development becomes increasingly challenging. Employment is crucial for human dignity. If the economy can grow, then debt issues can be managed more sustainably.
Both pickups and double cabs continued to see declines of 11.50% and 4.95%, respectively, due to strict lending policies as per data from banks as economic expansion continues at low rates. SME income remains weak, sustaining high household debt levels.
The Automotive Industry Club, FTI, urges the government to assist in pickup production, which this year has been adversely affected from exports to the Middle East due to the ongoing war in the region for over nine months, leading to a 33,118 unit decline in pickup exports compared to last year, equating to a 37.73% drop in exports to the Middle East. It is crucial to stimulate increased lending for domestic pickup purchases, matching last year’s levels, so that production does not decline from last year, preserving supply chain manufacturing jobs and potentially increasing employment when economic growth improves. Increased investment will enhance government tax revenues while reducing public debt, household debt, and non-performing loans while strengthening financial institutions. This can initiate economic growth at rates above 3%, 4%, and 5%, accelerating Thailand’s transition from a high-middle-income country to a developed and prosperous nation. All this hinges on the capabilities of government leadership, which in various countries has proven capable of generating more growth than others.
Thus, a call is made for the government to restructure excise taxes fairly for entrepreneurs investing in producing internal combustion vehicles and electric vehicles to protect and promote Thailand’s automotive industry for continued growth as a significant global automotive manufacturing and export base.
