Diplomatic relations between Thailand and Austria officially began in 1869 and have developed continuously, encompassing multifaceted cooperation in political, economic, trade and investment, education, science and technology, as well as cultural and people-to-people relations. Notably, there is cooperation in education and human resource development, which plays a significant role in enhancing personnel skills and bolstering the competitive capacity of the Thai industrial sector.
One key example of this cooperation is the establishment of the Thai-Austrian Technical College in 1969, under a cooperative agreement between the Thai and Austrian governments. The Austrian side has supported academic knowledge, machinery and equipment, as well as technical expertise to transfer knowledge and develop the skills of Thai personnel.
This cooperation reflects Austria's role in supporting the development of vocational and technical personnel, who are essential in driving the Thai industrial sector forward.
In terms of economy and trade, Austria also supports negotiations for a free trade agreement between Thailand and the European Union (Thailand–EU FTA), which is an important mechanism for expanding trade and investment opportunities, reducing trade barriers, and increasing access for Thai entrepreneurs to the European market. This is especially true in promoting cooperation in high-value-added technology and industries, which will help strengthen economic relations between Thailand and Austria, as well as with EU member states in the long term.
