This article is honored to feature Dr. Pharm. Charnnarong Techa-angkorn, Chairman of the Biotechnology Industry Group at the Federation of Thai Industries, who shares interesting information and the significance of biotechnology, which will help many people become more familiar with biotechnology and understand how it relates to our daily lives.
Biotechnology has been used to transform Thailand for a long time. It is considered classical biotechnology, which is relatively simple, such as various types of fermentation that we are all familiar with, like fish sauce, soy sauce, and alcoholic beverages. This process requires a long time to yield quality products. Biotechnology has continuously developed and advanced from traditional biotechnology to modern biotechnology, supported by Thailand's high biodiversity, including plants, herbs, and aquatic animals, which are crucial resources for the country's development and the enhancement of the quality of life for citizens, allowing for multi-dimensional value creation. Importantly, it plays a significant role in industrial transformation, such as the shift from plastic to bioplastics, biofabrics made from natural plant fibers, biochemicals, biofertilizers, future food, novel food, biological medicine, vaccines, and even creating sustainable energy security from biofuels. Furthermore, it has been widely applied to address global societal challenges, particularly in health and medicine, such as the production of drugs and vaccines, which were crucial for health security during the COVID-19 pandemic, and in solving crimes through DNA analysis, cloning, gene therapy, and stem cell treatments. Therefore, biotechnology is regarded as a "multi-disciplinary science," or jokingly, as a "kebab stick." ..
Driving the Future of Biotechnology in the Thai Industry
The Biotechnology Industry Group will drive its operations under the ONE FTI policy, which falls under the Next-GEN Industries leading to strengthening the Thai industry for a more resilient Thailand, in accordance with the government's direction based on the BCG economic model, which focuses on 1) agriculture and food, 2) health and medicine, 3) energy, biomaterials and biochemicals, and 4) tourism and the creative economy. Particularly, the government's goal is to promote Thailand as the Bio Hub of Asia by 2027.
Future biotechnology trends to watch include the production of cultured meat, personalized medicine, genetic engineering, and the biotechnology development plan being part of the strategy for Thailand 4.0 industrial development for sustainable national progress. This incorporates biotechnology into one of the key industries for national development while also promoting the dissemination of biotechnology knowledge to further support medicine and agriculture.
Health functional food and novel food, which are global trends, should also be developed by the Thai biotechnology industry.

Investment in research and development is crucial for advancing the future of biotechnology, which has proven to be a key driver of development in various aspects. In recent years, biotechnology has provided numerous benefits for human survival that are astonishing. However, many may wonder what the future direction of biotechnology will be as we currently face an aging society, environmental challenges, and must accommodate a global population expected to exceed 9 billion by 2050. The extent to which we can support such growth remains uncertain. Therefore, research and development (R&D) will address all these factors, including the urgency to accelerate biotechnology development, which cannot be overlooked by the government, the key player in pushing forward the biotechnology policy framework in Thailand. This includes improving regulations to enhance investment in biotechnology research and development, increasing the establishment of research laboratories to develop Thailand's biotechnological capabilities, and conducting research that responds to the genuine needs of the industry while also producing more specialized biotechnology researchers, which are currently in short supply. If we view biotechnology as an industry poised to change the future, Thailand must continuously invest in biotechnology research and development, with the industrial sector expecting to see commercial advancements. Nevertheless, modernizing and developing biotechnology not only leads to sustainable development and national security but also enhances competitive capabilities in the economic sector related to science and technology.
