On Friday, November 29, 2024, the International Barcode Institute of the Federation of Thai Industries, or GS1 Thailand, held its annual general meeting for the year 2024 under the theme “GS1 International Standards for Sustainable Development of the Thai Industry with Accurate, Transparent Information and Enhanced Consumer Safety” at The Berkeley Hotel Pratunam, aiming to promote and drive the Thai industry by leveraging accurate and verifiable product information to enhance consumer safety while being part of the sustainable balance of the Thai economy.

Mr. Kriangkrai Theeranukul, Chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), stated that FTI continues to operate under the “One FTI” policy (One Vision, One Team, One Goal), focusing on the adaptation of the industrial sector to technological advancements and the changing demands of the world, including the development of the Thai industry towards sustainability. The International Barcode Institute, or GS1 Thailand, an organization under the supervision of FTI, plays a significant role in driving policies through the implementation of GS1 international standards to manage information for accuracy and transparency, which can increase product value, reduce costs, manage the supply chain efficiently, and enhance consumer safety. This is an essential tool for Thai operators to elevate product standards to be internationally recognized.

However, the effective implementation of GS1 international standards requires cooperation from all sectors, including government, private, and civil society. FTI is committed to being a mediator in facilitating cooperation among various sectors to promote the widespread adoption of GS1 international standards within the Thai industry. I firmly believe that integrating GS1 international standards with policies and directions for the development of the Thai economy will help Thailand overcome challenges and create new opportunities.

Dr. Komsan Laosilpajaroen, Vice Chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) and President of GS1 Thailand, stated that GS1 Thailand has been operating in Thailand for over 36 years. We are a non-profit organization under the supervision of FTI, with the primary mission of officially registering barcode numbers according to GS1 international standards in Thailand and supporting and promoting the use of GS1 international standards, which have clear practices for identifying products, assets, and locations in a tangible manner that allows for traceability. This enables stakeholders throughout the supply chain to access information that is accurate, rapid, and automated. The GS1 international standard is widely utilized, being operational in over 150 countries worldwide, and serves as a tool that fosters greater efficiency in the operations of various businesses and industries in the digital age.

This year, GS1 Thailand held its annual general meeting for the year 2024 under the theme "GS1 International Standards for Sustainable Development of the Thai Industry with Accurate, Transparent Information and Enhanced Consumer Safety" to report on various important operational outcomes, such as 1) a project to promote GS1 international barcodes to enhance the capabilities of entrepreneurs and elevate the standards of Thai products through training on GS1 international barcodes in five regions, including Chiang Mai, Buriram, Khon Kaen, Chonburi, Bangkok, Surat Thani, and Songkhla, 2) a project in collaboration with the retail and wholesale industries to provide quality barcode verification services to retailers before goods are stored, thereby enhancing inventory management efficiency, 3) a project promoting the use of 2D barcodes in collaboration with businesses in the retail industry, and 4) a project developing medicine registration codes and codes for traceability of medicines in Thailand (e-Labelling), as well as studying the feasibility and gathering user requirements for developing traceability and monitoring systems for health product distribution using GS1 international standards.

In addition, there were knowledge disseminations and presentations of interesting activities for members, with esteemed speakers from partner agencies in both the public and private sectors invited to share knowledge, including representatives from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), PMF Company Limited, the producer of Taro brand fish snacks, CP ALL Public Company Limited, and SCG Logistics Public Company Limited, alongside updates on technology trends beneficial to entrepreneurs for business adaptation.
