Production
The total number of cars produced in January 2024 was 142,102 units, a decrease of 12.46% from January 2023, due to a 33.62% decline in production for domestic sales, with the production of pickup trucks for domestic sales falling by as much as 50.89% in line with decreased sales. Production of passenger vehicles for domestic sales decreased by 14.68% from imported electric vehicles, which had a registration total of 13,314 units in January 2024, whereas local production of electric vehicles stood at only 652 units, although this represents an increase of 11.96% from December 2023.

In January 2024, 52,509 passenger vehicles were produced, down 7.27% from January 2023. This included:

Passenger vehicles with Internal Combustion Engines totaled 32,655 units, a decline of 95% from January 2023.
Battery Electric Vehicles totaled 652 units, up 9,214.29% from January 2023.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles totaled 401 units, down 70% from January 2023.
Hybrid Electric Vehicles totaled 18,801 units, an increase of 63% from January 2023.
Passenger vehicles weighing less than 10 tons and those over 10 tons totaled 10 units in January 2024, a decline of 16.67% from January 2023.

Trucks produced in January 2024 totaled 89,583 units, down 15.24% from January 2023.

Production of one-ton pickups in January 2024 totaled 86,788 units, a decrease of 16.02% from January 2023, broken down as follows:

• Pickup trucks totaled 16,086 units, a decrease of 17% from January 2023.
   
• Double-cab pickups totaled 55,454 units, a decrease of 34% from January 2023.
   
• Pickup trucks classified as PPV totaled 15,248 units, a decrease of 47% from January 2023.
   

Trucks weighing less than 5 tons – more than 10 tons totaled 2,795 units in January 2024, an increase of 19.29% from January 2023.

Production for Export

In January 2024, 95,110 units were produced for export, accounting for 66.93% of total production, an increase of 3.91% from January 2023.

Passenger vehicles produced for export in January 2024 totaled 27,589 units, an increase of 0.63% from January 2023.

One-ton pickups produced for export in January 2024 totaled 67,521 units, an increase of 5.31% from January 2023, broken down as follows:

• Pickup trucks for export totaled 6,395 units, an increase from January 2023 of 09.
   
• Double-cab pickups totaled 48,312 units, a decrease of 96% from January 2023.
   
• PPV-type pickups totaled 12,814 units, an increase of 49% from January 2023.
   

Production for Domestic Sale

In January 2024, 46,992 units were produced for domestic sale, accounting for 33.07% of total production, a decrease of 33.62% from January 2023.

Passenger vehicles produced for domestic sale in January 2024 totaled 24,920 units, a decrease of 14.68% from January 2023.

One-ton pickups produced for domestic sale in January 2024 totaled 19,267 units, down 50.89% from January 2023, broken down as follows:

• Pickup trucks totaled 9,691 units, a decrease of 39% from January 2023.
   
• Double-cab pickups totaled 7,142 units, a decrease of 43% from January 2023.
   
• PPV-type pickups totaled 2,434 units, a decrease of 22% from January 2023.

Motorcycles
In January 2024, a total of 224,589 motorcycles were produced, a decrease of 5.56% from January 2023, consisting of completed motorcycles (CBU) totaling 177,822 units, down 8.30% from 2023, and motorcycle parts (CKD) totaling 46,767 units, an increase of 6.50% from January 2023.

Sales

Domestic car sales in January 2024 totaled 54,814 units, a decrease of 16.42% from January 2023, as the sales of pickup trucks fell to only 14,864 units, down 43.47% due to stricter loan approvals by financial institutions given the high household debt. PPV vehicle sales declined by 43.86% due to the absence of new models, coupled with newly launched affordable hybrid SUVs capturing market share. Truck sales also dropped by 32.01% as the 2024 fiscal budget was delayed by several months, affecting investment, spending, and government economic stimulus. The country's economy has been growing at a low level since the fourth quarter of 2023, categorized as follows:

• Passenger vehicles and patrol cars totaled 34,364 units, accounting for 62.69% of total sales, an increase of 11.59% from the same month last year.
• Passenger vehicles with Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) totaled 14,373 units, accounting for 22% of total sales, down from 32.81% in the same month last year.
• Passenger EVs (BEV) totaled 9,763 units, accounting for 81% of total sales, an increase of 205.48% from the same month last year.
• Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) totaled 98 units, accounting for 18% of total sales, down 67.66% from the same month last year.
• Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) totaled 10,130 units, accounting for 48% of total sales, an increase of 71.52% from the same month last year.

Pickup trucks totaled 14,864 units, down 43.47% from the same month last year. PPV vehicles totaled 3,074 units, a decrease of 43.86% from the same month last year. Trucks in the 5 – 10 ton category totaled 1,079 units, down 32.01% from the same month last year, and other vehicle types totaled 1,433 units, an increase of 0.56% from the same month last year.

As for motorcycles, total sales reached 154,003 units, down 16.34% from December 2023 and down 3.30% from January 2023.

Exports
Completed Vehicles

In January 2024, 86,716 units were exported, a decrease of 3.97% from December 2023 and down 0.08% from January 2023, as only 91.17% of the production for export was shipped due to insufficient shipping capacity, resulting in declines in Asian, African, and North American markets. This included Internal Combustion Engine vehicles (ICE) totaling 81,763 units, an increase of 4.85% from 2023, and HEVs totaling 4,953 units, an increase of 478.62% from 2023. The export value stood at 60,567.43 million baht, down 14.99% from January 2023. Nevertheless, the export of auto parts and components increased as follows:

• Engines had an export value of 2,110.46 million baht, down 45% from January 2023.
   
• Other auto parts had an export value of 15,038.08 million baht, an increase of 68% from January 2023.
   

• Auto components had an export value of 1,917.91 million baht, an increase of 60% from January 2023.
   

  Total export value of vehicles in January 2024 including engines, auto parts, and components was 79,633.88 million baht, an increase of 14.25% from January 2023.

Motorcycles

In January 2024, a total of 82,853 motorcycles (including CBU + CKD) were exported, a decrease of 8.20% from December 2023 and down 5.39% from January 2023, with an export value of 5,757.22 million baht, down 9.11% from January 2023.

• Motorcycle parts had an export value of 28 million baht, down 21.20% from January 2023.
   
• Motorcycle components had an export value of 34 million baht, down 5.32% from January 2023.

        The total export value of motorcycles in January 2024, including parts and components, was 6,124.83 million baht, down 9.53% from January 2023.

In January 2024 the total export value of completed vehicles, engines, other parts, auto components, motorcycles, parts, and components amounted to 85,758.71 million baht, an increase of 12.15% compared to 2023.

Newly Registered BEV Vehicles in January 2024

In January 2024, the number of newly registered electric vehicles (BEV) was 15,943 units, an increase of 238.71% from December of the previous year, categorized as follows:

• Passenger and various vehicle types totaled 13,574 units, an increase of 92% from January 2023.
   
  • Passenger vehicles totaled           13,322 units.
     
  • Passenger vehicles for up to 7 people totaled     242 units.
     
  • Business service vehicles totaled        1 unit.
