Sales
The total domestic car sales for July 2026 stood at 59,196 units, an increase of 0.80% from June 2026 and a growth of 20.07% from July 2025.

Sales increased due to electric vehicle (BEV) sales reaching 20,989 units, up 122.08%, accounting for 35.46% of total sales. Meanwhile, conventional internal combustion engine cars sold only 7,654 units, reflecting a decrease of 34.58% and constituting 12.76% of total sales, attributed to high fuel prices. The sales of pickup trucks also saw a decline of 16.22% due to tightened credit release by financial institutions, which reported a contraction in auto loans by 7.8%.

Concerningly, from the sales data over the first seven months of the year, a total of 406,162 units were sold, representing an increase of 15.39%. The sales of electric passenger cars reached 125,411 units, an increase of 97.39%, yet the production of electric passenger cars domestically was only 46,924 units, accounting for 37.42% of total sales. This indicates that imported electric cars comprised 62.58% of the sales, leading to calls for a review of tax policies that may unfairly disadvantage domestically produced internal combustion cars and electric vehicles, which employ Thai labor and use domestically sourced parts that contribute to local economic growth, against imported electric vehicles. Therefore, there are calls for the government to revise tax structures for fairer treatment of domestically manufactured vehicles.

Another alarming concern is the decline in pickup sales, which have dropped to just over 10,000 units from previous monthly sales of over 30,000, marking a decrease of more than 60%, primarily due to strict lending policies from financial institutions amid persistently low economic growth. The economy grew by 1.9% in the second quarter, down from 2.8% in the first quarter.

The decline in pickup truck sales, which utilize up to 90% locally produced parts, adversely affects component manufacturers and other industries within the pickup supply chain, influencing the industrial production index of the country to decline or grow at reduced rates in some months, employing less than 60% of total production capacity. Pickup trucks represent Thailand's champion product, migrating from production bases in Japan to Thailand over several decades for exports to over 120 countries and domestic sales. A two-thirds reduction in production has led many component manufacturers and supply chain businesses to face hardships, with some parts manufacturers having to cease operations or relocate investments to other countries. The Thai Federation of Industries previously proposed two years ago that the government establish a fund to guarantee financial institutions against real loan losses, limited to 50,000 THB per vehicle, conditioned upon increasing the issuance of pickup truck loans in the following months to boost sales and production, thereby increasing employment and income for labor within the supply chain. This would enhance domestic purchasing power, stimulate consumer spending, enable households to repay debts more effectively, and lead to increased investment and employment opportunities. Consequently, the government would collect more excise taxes, value-added taxes, and income taxes, which can be reinvested into national development to improve citizens' living standards. A prosperous economy growing at higher rates will attract foreign investment and encourage Thai citizens to invest, creating a cyclical growth effect wherein greater production leads to increased sales, profits, and robust liquidity, thereby keeping existing producers engaged and investing in Thailand without concerns of other countries enticing them to relocate, thereby fostering growth rates comparable to or exceeding other countries, proving to be the most powerful pull for international investment and local investments from Thai citizens.
