Mr. Suwat Supakarndechakul, Vice Chairman of The Federation of Thai Industries and Chairman of the Automotive Industry Club, and Mr. Surapong Phaisithpattanapong, Advisor to the Chairman of the Automotive Industry Club and Spokesperson of the Automotive Industry Club, The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), jointly presented the situation of the overall automotive industry, production figures, domestic sales, and exports of vehicles and motorcycles for the month of August 2026 as follows:
Mr. Suwat, as the Chairman of the Automotive Industry Club, announced, “As the Chairman of the Automotive Industry Club, The Federation of Thai Industries, I would like to thank the government for the Board EV resolution made on September 10, which aligns with some of the three main pillars proposed regarding the protection, stimulation, and promotion of the Thai automotive industry as discussed and presented to the government continuously by the Automotive Industry Club and the Thai Automotive Industry Association.
The restructuring of excise tax by setting tax rates for electric vehicles imported from abroad, where no domestic manufacturing facilities exist, higher than those for domestically produced electric vehicles is a correct approach to protect long-time investors and producers in the country. The tiered tax rates based on investment levels, production, and added value in Thailand, I believe, will motivate manufacturers to invest and expand production bases while increasing the usage of locally produced components.
At this time, we are still awaiting the official announcement of the tax rates. However, our work is not finished here; we are also studying local content or Thai content to maximize benefits for domestic parts producers, which is one of the main ecosystems of the Thai automotive industry. Furthermore, there are considerations regarding import quotas based on the economic value that manufacturers create in Thailand as well.
For the overall automotive industry situation in the past eight months, production and domestic sales have shown growth, while exports have decreased, with domestic sales estimated at around 466,000 units. However, the pickup truck market, which is the country’s product champion, has been continuously shrinking for several years, declining approximately 63% since 2022. Exports of pickup trucks are also negative, reflecting that pressure is not only stemming from domestic purchasing power but also starting to transmit from the export market. The crisis of the Middle East war has resulted in a decline in pickup truck sales, impacting not only car manufacturers but also the deeper supply chain, as pickup trucks have a high local content ratio, with some brands exceeding 90%.
I and my Automotive Industry Club hope to see "stimulating" measures from the government in the near future to maintain production levels and cost competitiveness, as well as the ecosystem of our product champion.
Finally, I would like to send my best wishes to the citizens affected by the flooding situation that we are currently facing. Everyone can follow up on relief campaigns from all automotive manufacturers and motorcycle dealers on the official Facebook page of The Federation of Thai Industries and the Thai Automotive Industry Association.

Sales
Total domestic car sales in August 2026 amounted to 59,809 units, representing a 1.04% increase from July 2026 and a 25.59% increase from August 2025.
This increase was attributed to electric car sales of 19,721 units, a 113.29% increase, accounting for 32.97% of total sales, or nearly one-third of total sales. Meanwhile, total production of electric cars was 13,126 units, 6,595 units less than sales. As a result, in the first eight months of the year, total production of electric cars in Thailand was 60,578 units, constituting only 41.74% of total sales of 145,132 units, with imported electric cars at 84,554 units, accounting for 58.26% of total sales. This indicates that more electric cars were imported for sale than produced domestically, adversely affecting investors who manufacture electric cars using Thai labor and locally produced components. Therefore, there have been calls for the government to restructure excise taxes to create a balance for long-time domestic manufacturers and newer investors to ensure that Thailand becomes a base for internal combustion vehicle production, especially pickup trucks, and a base for electric vehicle production for export worldwide to meet the diverse needs of partner countries regarding infrastructure.
The Automotive Industry Group, The Federation of Thai Industries, supports the Ministry of Energy's promotion of increased use of biofuels, as these can be produced domestically, reducing the importation of expensive oil, which raises transportation costs and thus adversely affects the living costs of citizens who must spend more, while the government cannot provide more jobs and income for Thai people. The industrial production index continues to expand at a low rate, partly due to the decline in pickup truck production of over 300,000 units over the past three years since pickup trucks use over 90% local content. When pickup truck production continues to drop, industries producing pickup truck parts and related industries have been affected, resulting in liquidity crises for some companies, leading to job cuts, lower wages, and even business closures, as has been reported in the media. Consequently, the joint private sector must write to the government urging them to stimulate financial institutions to grant more loans to pickup truck buyers to create more jobs and income for Thai people so that the Thai economy can grow competitively with neighboring countries. Thus, we propose that the government help stimulate the economy for trucks that can use B20 and passenger cars to use a gasohol mix to increase sales, leading to higher production and employment in the entire automotive supply chain improving the income of Thai people, which in turn stimulates more spending, leading to genuine reductions in household debts. This would initiate an upward economic growth cycle and help Thailand rapidly achieve a higher income status without needing to wait another 20 years.
Sales of pickup trucks and double cab pickups continue to decline by 10.77% and 3.63%, respectively, due to stricter lending conditions from financial institutions according to data from banks as the economy continues to expand at a low rate, and SME income remains weak, thereby keeping household debts high.
