Reinvent Thailand
Thailand produces more than 80% of the world's HDDs, a significant strength in the AI supply chain.
Thailand is a manufacturing base for hard disk drives (HDD) producing over 80% of the world’s supply, with Seagate having operated in Thailand for over 40 years, employing more than 15,000 people, and utilizing over 60% of its domestic supply chain. Seagate views Data Storage as one of Thailand's significant strengths in the AI infrastructure supply chain and is committed to continuously investing in research and development in Thailand.
Furthermore, Seagate has proposed that the government promote Data Storage as part of the nation's strategy, expedite policy decision-making processes to be clear and swift, redefine research and development to encompass real production operations, and place importance on supporting investment from existing investors alongside attracting new investors.
Maintaining existing investors is as important as attracting new ones.
Mrs. Pimjai Leeissaranukul, Chairman of the FTI, emphasized that investors already based in Thailand have demonstrated their potential for tangible business operations, as evidenced by the country being a manufacturing base for over 80% of the world’s HDDs and a significant center of the supply chain that generates employment and uplifts numerous Thai entrepreneurs. Therefore, promoting this group of investors to expand their investments and reinvest in Thailand is a crucial issue that must run parallel to attracting new investors.
Promoting Data Storage as part of the Smart Electronics proposal under Reinvent Thailand.
The FTI will push the issues of HDD and Data Storage, along with the continuous support for investment from existing investors, to be included in the proposals for the development of the Smart Electronics industry under the Reinvent Thailand framework to be presented to the government. This aims to leverage the growth of AI and Data Center businesses to fully capitalize on domestic hardware and supply chain production while cooperating with the Board of Investment (BOI) and related agencies through the Electrical and Electronics Industry Group to advance these issues to policy level.
Moreover, the FTI will monitor progress and collaborate closely with Seagate to transform the strengths of existing production bases into opportunities for renewed investment, while maintaining Thailand's role as a manufacturing base and a key player in the global Data Storage supply chain of AI.
