เมื่อวันที่ 5 พฤษภาคม 2569 ดร.นิลสุวรรณ ลีลารัศมี และ ดร.ปิยะนุช มาลากุล ณ อยุธยา รองประธานสภาอุตสาหกรรมแห่งประเทศไทย (ส.อ.ท.) พร้อมด้วยผู้แทนจากคณะกรรมการร่วมภาคเอกชน 3 สถาบัน (กกร.) เข้าพบหารือและแลกเปลี่ยนความคิดเห็นกับ Mr. Darren Smith, Chief Negotiator, Canada–Thailand FTA ในโอกาสเดินทางเยือนประเทศไทย เพื่อเตรียมกำหนดกรอบการเจรจาความตกลงการค้าเสรี (FTA) ระหว่างไทยและแคนาดา ณ บริษัท เบเคอร์ แมคเค็นซี่ ประเทศไทย
ความสัมพันธ์ทางการค้าและเศรษฐกิจระหว่างประเทศไทยและแคนาดามีพัฒนาการอย่างต่อเนื่องและมั่นคง โดยมีมูลค่าการค้ารวมประมาณ 3 พันล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐต่อปี
ไทยส่งออกสินค้าไปยังแคนาดา อาทิ อาหารแปรรูป ชิ้นส่วนอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ และยานยนต์ ขณะที่แคนาดาส่งออกเครื่องจักร เทคโนโลยีการเกษตร และทรัพยากรธรรมชาติมายังไทย
นอกจากนี้ ทั้งสองประเทศยังมีความร่วมมือด้านการลงทุน การศึกษา และเทคโนโลยีอย่างต่อเนื่อง โดยมีบริษัทแคนาดาเข้ามาลงทุนในไทย รวมถึงการแลกเปลี่ยนองค์ความรู้ระหว่างกัน ซึ่งมีส่วนสำคัญในการส่งเสริมและขยายความสัมพันธ์ทางเศรษฐกิจระหว่างสองประเทศ
ทั้งนี้ การจัดทำความตกลงการค้าเสรี (FTA) ระหว่างไทยและแคนาดาจะเป็นกลไกสำคัญในการยกระดับความร่วมมือทางเศรษฐกิจ โดยช่วยเพิ่มโอกาสทางการค้า การลงทุน และการเชื่อมโยงห่วงโซ่อุปทานในระดับภูมิภาคให้เข้มแข็งยิ่งขึ้น ซึ่งภาคเอกชนไทยให้การสนับสนุนการเจรจาดังกล่าว โดยเฉพาะในปี 2569 ซึ่งเป็นวาระครบรอบ 65 ปี การสถาปนาความสัมพันธ์ทางการทูตไทย–แคนาดา อีกทั้ง หากการเจรจาประสบความสำเร็จ จะนับเป็นความตกลงการค้าเสรีฉบับแรกของไทยกับประเทศในทวีปอเมริกาเหนือ และมีบทบาทสำคัญในการลดอุปสรรคทางการค้าทั้งด้านภาษีและที่มิใช่ภาษี รวมถึงเสริมสร้างการเชื่อมโยงห่วงโซ่อุปทาน และส่งเสริมบทบาทของทั้งสองประเทศในฐานะประตูการค้าระหว่างภูมิภาคต่อไป
On May 5, 2026, Dr. Nilsuwan Leelarasamee and Dr. Piyanut Malakul na Ayutthaya, Vice Chairpersons of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), along with representatives from the Joint Private Sector Committee of three institutions, met to discuss and exchange views with Mr. Darren Smith, Chief Negotiator for the Canada–Thailand FTA, during his visit to Thailand at Baker McKenzie Thailand to prepare for the establishment of a framework for negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Thailand and Canada.
The trade and economic relations between Thailand and Canada have developed continuously and securely, with a total trade value of approximately 3 billion USD annually.
Thailand exports products to Canada, such as processed food, electronic components, and automobiles, while Canada exports machinery, agricultural technology, and natural resources to Thailand.
Furthermore, both countries continue to cooperate in investment, education, and technology, with Canadian companies investing in Thailand and exchanging knowledge with each other, which plays a significant role in promoting and expanding economic relations between the two countries.
In this regard, the establishment of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Thailand and Canada will be a key mechanism to enhance economic cooperation, increase opportunities for trade, investment, and strengthen regional supply chain linkages. The Thai private sector supports this negotiation, especially in 2026, which marks the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Canada. Moreover, if the negotiations succeed, it will represent the first free trade agreement of Thailand with a country in North America, playing a crucial role in reducing trade barriers related to tariffs and non-tariff measures, as well as enhancing the connectivity of supply chains and promoting both countries' roles as trade gateways in the region.
