On Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Mr. Surapong Paisitpattanapong, Advisor to the Chairman and Spokesperson for the Automotive Industry Group of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), disclosed that in August, Thailand produced a total of 112,366 vehicles, representing a decrease of 6.11% compared to the previous year, due to a slowdown in production for export. However, production of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) surged to 7,512 units, reflecting an increase of over 2,034% from the previous year, marking the highest level since Thailand began marketing BEVs.
Regarding domestic sales, August saw total sales reach 47,622 units, up 5.38%. Specifically, BEVs sold reached 9,309 units, an increase of 27.49%, making up nearly one-fifth of total vehicle sales. Meanwhile, sales of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) grew by 400%, and Range-Extended Electric Vehicles (REEV) increased by 100%, indicating a growing trend among Thai consumers towards electric vehicles.
Production
The total number of vehicles produced in August 2025 was 112,366 units, a rise of 1.58% from July 2025 but a drop of 6.11% from August 2024. This reduction was driven by a 10.67% decrease in production for export compared to August last year, primarily due to a 21.27% decline in passenger car production, where certain models were discontinued due to stricter safety equipment regulations in partner countries. Additionally, exports of pickup trucks also fell by 6.36% due to tightened carbon emissions regulations in partner countries. However, production for domestic sales increased by 4.11% as a result of electric vehicle production compensating for the import of electric vehicles sold in 2022 - 2023.
The number of vehicles produced from January to August 2025 totaled 947,697 units, representing a decrease of 5.77% from January to August 2024.

The new government under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has expressed intentions to stimulate the country's economy for greater growth. They propose initiatives ensuring tax revenues exceed payouts, potentially alleviating payouts if the economy improves. This proposal was part of the Federation of Thai Industries' suggestion from last year to establish a 5 billion baht fund to cover losses from repossession and resale of pickup trucks at a loss, wherein actual loss reimbursements would not exceed 50,000 baht per vehicle for financial institutions under the condition that financial lenders must increase overall pickup truck sales by at least 30% from the previous year. Hypothetically, if the previous year 130,000 pickups sold, it must allow for sales exceeding that number by 30%, thus, 170,000 units this year. For the additional 40,000 vehicles, the government would guarantee losses per repossessed vehicle not exceeding 50,000 baht, setting a fund for loss guarantees at 2 billion baht (40,000 units × 50,000 baht). The government anticipates 3% excise tax on pickups, amounting to 720 million baht (calculating an average of 600,000 baht per pickup sold). Coupled with 7% VAT on the 24 billion baht, yielding 1.68 billion baht in revenue, these two tax types could yield an overall increase of 2.4 billion baht, surpassing the fund's 2 billion baht. Moreover, corporate income tax would also be collected as supply chain businesses see expanded sales volumes and profits, such as companies producing automotive tires selling 160,000 tires, window materials increasing by 40,000 sheets, and air conditioning systems selling an additional 40,000 units. Increased sales among supply chain workers and financial institution personnel would lead to higher household incomes, reducing the overall debt burden, subsequently increasing demand for consumer goods, higher food consumption, increased travel, and overall economic liquidity. Such progress would tangible engage foreign and domestic investor confidence, facilitating more rapid investments and increased product exports, thereby fostering an upward growth trajectory for Thailand’s economy. The size of the fund (2 billion or 5 billion baht) would depend on sales targets for incremental pickup truck sales each year, with government disbursement upon repossession and liquidation of pickup trucks.
Exports
Complete Automobiles
In August 2025, Thailand exported 71,179 vehicles, a decrease of 1.74% from the preceding month and down 17.30% from August 2024, attributed to a decline in oil-fueled pickup truck exports by 14.65% and gasoline passenger car exports by 35.09% due to strict carbon emission regulations in certain countries.
The breakdown of vehicle types exported in August 2025 is as follows:
• Pickup trucks totaled 41,141 units, comprising 57.80% of total exports, down 14.65% from 2024.
