On July 15, 2025, Mr. Wiwat Hemmantarak, Vice President of FTI, highlighted in the iBusiness Forum 2025 that the Thai economy faced multiple challenges in the first half of the year despite positive signs from investment and exports. He emphasized that the industrial sector must adapt to a green economy and innovation for recovery in the second half.

On July 15, 2025, Mr. Wiwatt Hemmontarap, Vice President of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), participated as a speaker at the iBusiness Forum 2025 under the theme “Decode 2025: The Mid-Year Signal” to provide insights into the overall economic picture of Thailand during the first half of the year and the recovery strategies for the Thai industrial sector in the second half, amidst various challenges, held at Meeting Room (MR) 210-211, Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.

Mr. Wiwatt revealed that the Thai economy during the first six months of 2025 had positive signals from exports which expanded by 14.9% compared to the previous year, and new investment value surged by nearly 97%. However, it was pressured by the tourism sector, which has yet to fully recover, with international tourist numbers decreasing by over 4%, and the manufacturing sector growing only by 0.6%. At the same time, household debt remains high at 87.4% of GDP, and the rate of new factory openings has shrunk by nearly half.

For the second half of the year, risk factors to watch include the United States’ import tax increases, which still apply Reciprocal Tariffs of up to 36% on several categories of Thai products, the ongoing trade war, issues regarding dumped goods from China, and export rights infringements that pressure the competitiveness of Thai operators. Additionally, geopolitical conflicts, such as tensions between Israel and Iran and the Thailand-Cambodia border issues, are also impacting border trade, which Thailand relies on heavily at over 40%.

The trade war with the United States remains a factor that Thai industries must monitor closely, as key products such as machinery, rubber, automobiles, and furniture—relying on the U.S. market for over 20%—could be significantly affected. Moreover, the United States has implemented measures to control exports of critical technologies, such as AI chips, which impact Thailand’s and ASEAN's production chains.

Regarding relations with Cambodia, the issues of border checkpoint closures or restrictions on imports of agricultural and fresh food products from Thailand have put border trade, which is critical for small operators, at risk, particularly at the Aranyaprathet checkpoint, which accounts for as much as 62% of total trade between the two countries.

On another front, the persistent high levels of household debt continue to pressure domestic consumption, with non-performing loans (NPL) on automotive and housing loans continuously rising, reflecting the financial burden on Thai households that remains fragile.

Despite the overall challenges, FTI pointed out that this is a significant opportunity to expedite the advancement of Thai industries towards a new economy through investments in Digital & AI innovation and driving towards a green economy following the BCG Model, including the Bio Economy, Circular Economy, and Green Economy to achieve the target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065.

Furthermore, Mr. Wiwatt has also suggested that the government accelerate the restructuring of industries, enhance technological and innovative capabilities, urgently negotiate new Free Trade Agreements (FTA), diversify export markets, tighten inspections on infringing goods, and promote the use of Local Content or Made in Thailand (MiT) to elevate sustainability and reduce reliance on traditional markets.

Amidst the volatility of the global economy, “Decode 2025” strongly emphasizes that in the second half of this year, the Thai industrial sector must swiftly “unlock” new potential, adapt rapidly, and aim to create opportunities from green technologies and innovations to effectively navigate trade crises and uncertainties sustainably.
