Connecting Process
(Productivity)

Since the Industrial Revolution, we have witnessed the evolution of technology and innovation that has changed and advanced over time, especially in the industrial sector, which has transformed significantly from the introduction of automation and robots to help solve problems and meet the increasing demands in the manufacturing sector. This has improved safety, high precision, enhanced efficiency and productivity in manufacturing, as well as reduced labor shortages in the industrial sector.
..
Robots are a part of the automation system, and the use of robots in industry has been used as an indicator of comparative industrial development among countries. In the Global Industry Vision (GIV) report, a forecast about working with robots (Working with Bots) predicts that by the year 2025, industries will have robots working alongside humans on production lines, with a ratio of 103 robots per 10,000 employees (or one robot for every 100 employees). Furthermore, the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) has revealed data on the top 5 countries utilizing the most robots in manufacturing in 2021, which include Rank 1 South Korea with 1,000 robots per 10,000 employees, Rank 2 Singapore with 670 robots per 10,000 employees, Rank 3 Japan with 399 robots per 10,000 employees, Rank 4 Germany with 397 robots per 10,000 employees, and Rank 5 China with 322 robots per 10,000 employees.
..
As global trends continue in this manner, the Thai workforce in the industrial sector has expressed concerns that automation and robots may take jobs away or replace human labor, leading to an understanding that the introduction of automation and robots aims to reduce human working time.
..
Here is an exclusive interview with Dr. Khattiya Kraikarn, Managing Director of KV Electronics Co., Ltd., who shares experiences and exchanges knowledge on the development and use of automation systems, to provide SMEs and other businesses with examples to initiate the implementation of automation appropriately in their businesses or factories.
It is better to measure by the number of automated processes rather than the number of robots.
Dr. Khattiya stated that the ranking information presented above, which uses the number of robots as an indicator of the development of automation systems in countries displaying technological advancement, in her opinion, is a rough measure that is usable. If we are to measure in detail how much each industry develops through automation, we should measure by the output of the number of processes that have been automated rather than simply the number of robots, because there are many automation systems in use that are not robots at all.
For example, her company employs around 100 production line workers and uses 12 small robotic arms, and there are several other automation systems assisting as well; they still assess that their level of automation development is less advanced than South Korea, based on experiences observing operations abroad.
Therefore, to measure the advancements of automation technology, one should count the number of working processes using automation compared to all processes present in the factory, although data collection may be challenging, which is why this approach is less frequently used.
..
Understanding "Automation and Robots"
Dr. Khattiya mentioned that robots are merely a part of automation; there are many automation systems in production that do not have a physical presence. Modern automation systems have the capacity to perform complex tasks. Automation systems or various mechanisms operate independently by following specific steps defined in programs written for them. Automation has come to assist in many aspects of daily life, such as automatic doors and elevators, which are also forms of automation that help us effectively perform repetitious tasks.
Robots, on the other hand, are specialized equipment designed to perform complex tasks effectively or to maneuver, such as arms, legs, and cameras, which are constructed from various parts to comprise a robot with specific capabilities, operating according to specialized program instructions automatically, with efficiency and precision, often to perform tasks that are particularly hazardous, risky, and beyond human capability, such as drones, deep-sea robots, wind turbine cleaning robots, or various robots we already see in industrial factories.
..
Good automation should work well alongside humans without causing delays.
It is important to study whether, while robots or automation systems are working together with humans, humans are waiting for the robots or automation systems. Conversely, while humans are working, are the robots or automation systems waiting for humans? A good automation system should work seamlessly without causing delays.
Furthermore, a good automation system must be able to work efficiently and appropriately with humans. Meanwhile, humans must learn and adapt to work in conjunction with automation systems. Automation should handle simpler and repetitive tasks, while humans should employ skills such as decision-making in specific situations, allowing for collaborative efforts in more complex tasks.
An example of a complex task is threading a spring wire into a tube, which is a difficult job for automation or robots. Efforts have been made to enable automation or robots to successfully accomplish this task, but it involves high investment costs. The more complex the task, the higher the cost of automating that process. This means that manufacturing plants must produce a large volume of items to justify the investment. Alternatively, humans may assist in initiating the threading of spring wire into tubes before allowing automation to perform the remaining steps. Thus, the investment can be reduced.
..
Promoting Collaborative Work with 2C Safely
Automation can be divided into two types:
Combining Process, which utilizes knowledge of Lean and Industrial Engineering (IE) to help reduce waste and inefficiencies, thus integrating and minimizing processes to enhance efficiency.
Connecting Process, a process that connects operations continuously so that humans do not have to manually deliver items, enhancing continuity in production.
If automation and robots are large machinery, safety in operations is the most important concern to allow people to work alongside automation without risk of danger. Therefore, the design and construction of systems must prioritize and consider the safety of workers, particularly when many people work alongside automation and robots, where safety standards must be heightened accordingly.
..
Automation and Productivity Enhancement
The ultimate goal of implementing automation is to enhance production productivity to remain competitive. Productivity increase serves as an indicator of production efficiency in terms of both input and output. When designing automation systems, it should promote a division of labor between humans and automation/robots, working together to achieve economic efficiency, which entails reducing costs and appropriately increasing overall yield.
..
Sharing Direct Experiences
KV Electronics Co., Ltd., a business producing electronic components for the Power Electronics industry, has begun to apply the concept of Industry 4.0 in its operations. The policy is to implement modern manufacturing equipment, initiating the use of mechanization to assist in production, and to design and develop automation/robot systems that work collaboratively with humans to enhance productivity. It would not be incorrect to term the company as one of the first SMEs adopting the principles of Industry 4.0. Currently, there are many organizations that visit the company to learn, especially SMEs, who can invest in automation and robotics at low costs.
Dr. Khattiya revealed that in the early stages, the company financed the investment in automation, as they identified a number of production processes requiring automation. Multiple System Integrators, referred to as SI, were engaged to evaluate, design, and construct the system, resulting in an investment of several million baht. The outcome was operational for a while before it had to be halted due to significant declines in yield. After participating in the LASI (Lean Automation System Integrator) program of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), they gained insights and knowledge—understanding that automation systems should not mimic human operations. Knowledge in Industrial Engineering (IE) is essential, along with understanding the principles of Lean, precision, and well-structured programming, consequently facilitating the adaptation of programs according to production process improvements swiftly.
..
Recommendations for SMEs
As understood, the evaluation of Thailand's readiness for Industry 4.0 is approximately at level 2.0, indicating that most SMEs still rely on human skills to operate certain equipment or machinery, with limited automation usage.
Most businesses in Thailand are SMEs, and if SME operators wish to enhance productivity, it is essential to understand their own issues and weaknesses (Pain Points), including input, output, production volumes according to orders, and the time spent in each step of the production process (Cycle Time). Acquiring this information is crucial and should come from actual measurement or can be aided by Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) data collection. Importantly, it is essential to study knowledge in Industrial Engineering (IE) and Lean to assist in improving production processes. After obtaining data on process steps and timing, it is advisable to implement Lean to reduce waste in production before adopting automation. It is necessary to calculate the break-even point and consider the selection of cost-effective automation systems. For SMEs that produce Make-to-Order (MTO), having clear production orders may render high investment costs impractical. However, simpler automation systems can initially be implemented alongside human efforts, such as using conveyor belts or robotic arms, which have been in use for several decades and often overlooked. Additionally, a straightforward way of learning about automation is to visit factories that utilize automation systems to observe and aid in decision-making.
..
Disagree with the Replacement of Humans by Automation and Robots in All Production Steps
The role of automation and robots introduced to elevate industry will help support individuals to have more time for higher-value tasks, as automation and robots cannot fully replace humans. If investments are made to replace humans entirely, it results in job losses and the depletion of skilled human labor. This reality is something we cannot agree with.
Humans, as vital labor, must develop their skills and capabilities to control and operate automation and robots, for ultimately, automation and robots also require humans.
..
In conclusion… automation and robots do not work based on emotions and do not have rest periods. Humans must adapt to the era of change, for otherwise they may indeed lose their jobs!
