From January 25-26, 2024, the Subcommittee on Development and Promotion of Business in ASEAN under the ASEAN and Logistics Division of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) organized a workshop titled “Thai Business Advances to ASEAN Market.” The seminar was honored by the presence of Mr. Wethit Chokwatana, Vice President of FTI and Chairman of the ASEAN and Logistics Division, who welcomed the participants, along with Mr. Krit Uengwidutthrasathit, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Development and Promotion of Business in ASEAN, who provided the background and objectives of the event. Over 30 participants attended the seminar at the PTT GROUP room (1012) on the 10th floor of FTI.
The purpose of this training is to enable participants to recognize the opportunities, channels, and tools available for conducting business in trade and investment among ASEAN countries, ultimately leading to the creation of business networks between Thailand and individual ASEAN countries.
The activities during the event spanned two days. The first day featured a special lecture allowing participants to understand the trade economic conditions in ASEAN and analyze the market of each ASEAN country, delivered by the esteemed speaker, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Piti Srisangnam, Executive Director of the ASEAN Foundation in Jakarta, who discussed the topic “ASEAN +3 / ASEAN +6 Opportunities and Challenges for Thai Business.” Additionally, the directors of overseas trade promotion offices or trade commissioners overseeing nine ASEAN countries shared in-depth information about conducting trade in these markets under the topic “SWOT Analysis… with the Pathway to Success for Thai Businesses.”
On the second day, the workshop focused on “Online Marketing Tools and Strategies,” led by Ms. Phukanisa Thanachapitichot and Mr. Thirarat Thitilewrachai, experts in online marketing for exports, as well as training on “Offline Marketing Solutions” by Mr. Jirawat Dechasathien, former Director of International Business Development at Siam Makro Public Company Limited.
The CLMV countries (Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, and Vietnam) present significant trading opportunities for Thai goods and services due to the ongoing popularity of Thai products. Furthermore, cross-border trade facilitates logistics efficiency. Even in Myanmar, where political situations may pose challenges, trade activities persist, and transactions between Thailand and Myanmar can be conducted in Thai Baht. As for the remaining ASEAN countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei, where the majority of the population is Muslim, adherence to halal product standards is essential for Thai entrepreneurs. In the Philippines, importers often prefer to be exclusive distributors, thus careful consideration should be given when selecting potential importers who can effectively cover all market segments. In Singapore, consumers emphasize innovative products and environmental considerations. The Office of Trade Promotion also continually engages in marketing and business matchmaking activities. Besides gaining insights into the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and risks of each ASEAN market, participants in this training also received practical training on tools for online trading to enhance recognition of their products in the ASEAN market.
