During the event, the Chairman of FTI opened the proceedings and congratulated the member establishments from the central region that received the TISI 9999 award before leading the executive team to visit the floating solar power generation system at SCG Thaluang and the Heat Battery technology at SCG Cleanergy, which represents another option for enhancing energy efficiency and reducing dependence on fossil fuels in the industrial sector.
The Heat Battery technology serves as an example of incorporating foreign technology developed in conjunction with Thai expertise. SCG has developed silica-based materials to be used with the heat energy storage system, marking a significant opportunity for innovation advancement, increasing the use of domestic materials, and reducing future technology costs.
In the afternoon, the FTI management team attended a presentation by Mr. Banjha Chawarin, the Governor of Saraburi Province, regarding the "Saraburi Sandbox: Low-Carbon Model City" project. This initiative is a collaboration among the province, the industrial sector, and the community under the PPPP (Public–Private–People Partnership) framework, with 102 networking partners involved in the implementation.
The Saraburi Sandbox project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions alongside economic development and enhancement of the quality of life for residents, covering industrial, energy, transportation, agriculture, and waste management sectors. According to project reports, the accumulated reduction in greenhouse gas emissions amounts to 6.87 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, with 90.58% of enterprises engaging in the Green Industry system.
In the industrial sector, there is promotion of hydraulic cement usage, development of LC3 cement, and MCCU technology to reduce carbon emissions from the production process. Saraburi has been selected by the World Economic Forum as the first green industrial transition cluster in Thailand and the third in ASEAN.
In terms of energy, the province is pushing for the development of grid modernization in four industrial areas: Phra Buddhabat, Kaeng Khoi, Ban Mo, and Nong Khae. This also includes enabling third-party access to the electric grid to increase the opportunities for the industrial sector to access cleaner energy.
At the same time, the project places significant importance on community participation, with 126 waste banks and over 120,000 members generating revenue from waste management amounting to 5.8 million Baht. Additionally, there is a promotion of low-carbon agriculture, reduction of burning in agricultural areas, skills development through the Learn to Earn Sandbox project, and improving housing for 125 vulnerable households.
For future operational guidelines, Saraburi Province proposes to elevate the Saraburi Sandbox from a provincial agenda to a national agenda, aligning it with the country's greenhouse gas reduction targets under NDC 3.0. They also request consideration for amending legal and regulatory obstacles, supporting budget allocations, personnel, and access to climate funding sources, as well as promoting the development of energy infrastructure to ensure the project's ongoing operations and scalability.
Furthermore, Saraburi Province has requested collaboration from the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) to advance proposals through the central Public-Private Joint Committee (PPP) mechanism for submission to the Cabinet, advocating for the implementation of the PPPP Thailand Model under the name "Green Transition Sandbox." This includes supporting amendments to legal and regulatory constraints, access to funding sources, and scaling successful projects to other provinces across the country.
The Moving Together event provided an opportunity for the industrial sector to learn about both applicable technologies and collaborative working methods at the local level, particularly the Saraburi Sandbox, which demonstrates that carbon reduction can proceed alongside cost reduction, increased income, and improved quality of life for citizens. This is a vital approach to elevating the Thai industry towards Intelligent Industry and enhancing the country's competitive capabilities sustainably.
